What should be looked for in a CT of the urinary tract?
Kidneys: smooth outline; uniform and symmetric opacity after administration of IV contrast.
Pelvicaliceal system: cupped calices with uniform width of renal parenchyma from calix to renal edge (parenchymal loss and associated blunted calyx indicate scar from prior infection).
Ureters: seen in cross-section as dots lying on the psoas muscles and not necessarily visible at all levels; may not be opaque if scanned early (i.e., within 2 minutes).
Bladder: smooth outline; wall is thin and reasonably uniform in diameter; the dependent portion is usually more opaque because contrast medium is heavier than urine.
