How does blood return to the heart in patients with azygos continuation of the IVC?

In azygos continuation of the IVC, the IVC terminates at the renal veins, and no intrahepatic segment is present. Blood flows from the IVC through collaterals to the dilated azygos system and returns to the SVC through the azygos arch.
