Finding the ligament of Treitz in an abnormal position on an upper gastrointestinal series confirms the diagnosis. (Normally, the ligament, demarcated by the junction of the fourth portion of the duodenum and the proximal jejunum, is to the left of the spine, at or above the level of the pylorus.)
