What is malrotation?

Normally, the bowel rotates a total of 270⁰ counterclockwise, causing the transverse portion of the duodenum to cross to the left of the spine and relocating the cecum to the right lower quadrant. In malrotation, the bowel rotates less than 270⁰. The duodeno-jejunal junction does not reach its expected location to left of the spine at the level of the duodenal bulb, and the colon may be on the left.
