What is the difference in appearance between profound and partial HIE in the perinatal period?

Profound ischemia is a severe insult at one point in time. It affects the deep gray nuclei,particularly the thalami and lentiform nuclei.
Partial ischemia is a milder insult that may be short or prolonged. It affects the cortex to a greater degree than does the profound form.
