They frequently conform to the shape of the underlying kidney - subcapsular or perinephric. The CT and ultrasound characteristics are variable, usually showing both cystic and solid elements. On ultrasound the cystic portions frequently contain internal echoes due to debris. An underlying renal abnormality is often demonstrable.
