Describe the typical appearance of a renal abscess.

Most have thick walls and show both cystic and solid components. CT may show enhancement of the wall of the abscess after contrast. The center may not be liquefied sufficiently to drain; it may be aspirated by CT or ultrasound guidance for culture.
