What is discography and when is it useful?

Discography is a relatively invasive dual-purpose test, evaluating both disc morphol-ogy and the presence or absence of discogenic pain. Intervertebral discs are punctured with a needle and injected with contrast. Reproduction of the patient's typical back pain with disc injection signals that the pain is originating from disc pathology at that level. The utility is controversial.
