Describe four pitfalls associated with MRI diagnosis of meniscal injury.
Describe four pitfalls associated with MRI diagnosis of meniscal injury.
1. Volume-averaging effects obscure fibrillatory degeneration of the free concave edge of the meniscal surface.
2. The transverse ligament, which courses through Hoffa's fat pad (in the anterior joint space) to connect the anterior horns of the medial and lateral menisci, may mimic a meniscal tear or fragment.
3. Normal variant ligaments of Humphrey or Wrisberg (anterior and posterior to the posterior cruciate ligament, respectively) may mimic a meniscal tear.
4. Fibrous changes post meniscectomy may have intermediate signal intensity.
