What two features of the meniscus should be assessed at MRI?
Size: The medial and lateral menisci normally appear as two bow ties on sagittal images. The bow tie is the anterior and posterior horn of the meniscus joined by the body. The body is normally only seen on the most peripheral two images, both medially and laterally.
Shape: The anterior and posterior horns of the lateral meniscus are symmetric. The anterior horn of the medial meniscus is smaller than the posterior horn.
