What is the imaging modality of choice for detecting lumbar disc pathology?

MRI is the study of choice.
Both the presence of disc disease and its nature may be characterized. CT myelography is excellent for revealing any disc disease, but it is somewhat less sensitive for detecting some disc abnormalities (i.e., annular tears). Routine CT is less sensitive and specific but may also detect disc pathology.
