What is the approach to the patient with osteomyelitis?

A plain radiograph of the affected extremity is obtained. If the film is positive, treatment is initiated. If the plain film is negative for osteomyelitis, an MRI or bone scan can be performed. A positive MRI or bone scan indicates a need for treatment.
