What is a Chance injury or fracture?

An unstable injury perpendicular to the spinal axis, which may extend through the intervertebral disc, ligaments, osseous structures, or a combination of these. The anterior, middle, and posterior columns are involved. Neurologic deficits occur only with disloca-tion. These fractures are often associated with significant intra-abdominal pathology.
