What is Jefferson's fracture?

Jefferson's fracture is a compression fracture of the bony ring of vertebra C1, characterized by splitting of the lateral masses and tearing of the transverse ligament. As with any bony ring, fracture always occurs in two or more places. (Try breaking a hard pretzel in one place only.)
