What is vicarious excretion?
Normally, only 1% of IV contrast is excreted by the liver and gastrointestinal tract. In patients with compromised renal function or large contrast loads, more contrast must be excreted by extrarenal means. Vicarious excretion is usually seen as a fluid-contrast level in the gallbladder 1 to 2 days after the contrast load.
