What structures are best evaluated by each basic imaging plane?

Vertical long axis: anterior and inferior walls and apex of the left ventricle, left atrial appendage

Horizontal long axis: mitral and tricuspid valves, septal and lateral walls and apex of the left ventricle, right ventricle free wall and atria.

Short axis: right and left ventricle

Three chamber: aortic valve, aortic root, left ventricular outflow tract, mitral valve (for prolapse), anteroseptal and inferolateral wall of the left ventricle
