What patient preparation is necessary prior to performing TEE?

1. Screen for esophageal disorders (i.e., diverticula, inflammation, varices, and tumors). Check the patient's history for dysphagia, odynophagia, liver disease, and irradiation.
2. Evaluate the airway, paying particular attention to the teeth.
3. Assess the likelihood of adequate cooperation.
4. Be prepared to intubate if respiratory depression ensues.
