How is acute bleeding confirmed?

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding: active bleeding above the ligament of Treitz can be confirmed by EGD or ice water lavage (continuous finding of aspirate with bright red blood after lavage indicates active bleeding). Lower gastrointestinal bleeding: active bleeding below the ligament of Treitz is more difficult to confirm.
