How is ultrasound used to evaluate for thrombus?
Ultrasound permits detailed examination of the deep venous system using a combination of grayscale, compression, and color Doppler imaging. The ultrasound transducer is held to show the vein in cross-section or longitudinally at 1- to 2-cm intervals along the entire vein. Compression is performed while imaging the vein in cross-section.
