What types of anesthesia may be used during the procedure?

Local: lidocaine without epinephrine is used to numb the puncture site.
Conscious sedation: usually a benzodiazepine is used in combination with an opioid; close cardiopulmonary monitoring is required.
General anesthesia may be required for some procedures, such as TIPS, or for children.
