What are the defining margins of the anterior, middle, and posterior mediastinum?

The anterior mediastinum (A) is ventral to the trachea and anterior border of the heart. The posterior mediastinum (P) is dorsal to a line drawn 1 cm posterior to the anterior border of the thoracic vertebral bodies. The middle mediastinum (M) lies between these two lines.
