What are the four possibilities if fluid is noted in the cul-de-sac?

1. Normal finding (if ovulating)
2. Ascites
3. Blood (as a result of trauma, endometriosis, postoperative status, ruptured ectopic pregnancy, or ruptured ovarian cyst)
4. Pus (as a result of PID) or other abdominal or pelvic infection
