What is a thyroid uptake study, and when is it indicated?
A thyroid uptake study measures the percentage of a dose of radioactive iodine taken up by the thyroid gland in a given period, usually 24 hours. It evaluates the physiologic process whereby the thyroid takes up iodine to manufacture thyroid hormone. The test is indicated when there is thyroid dysfunction, particularly hyperthyroidism.
