How can ischemic areas of myocardium be overlooked?
Because tracer counts are relative (all areas are compared with the most normal segment and displayed as a percent of normal), all areas in a diffusely ischemic heart display diminished uptake. Therefore, global ischemia may be interpreted as a normal study because there are no areas of relative underperfusion. This phenomenon is known as balanced ischemia.
