What are the diagnostic possibilities if the parathyroid glands cannot be visualized using either technique?
A hyperactive parathyroid can be ruled out; it is difficult to see normal parathyroid glands using either technique. However, the patient may have parathyroid hyperplasia and no glands active enough or big enough to be detected. An ectopic location in the chest or elsewhere in the neck must also be looked for.
