Describe how a perfusion imaging study is performed.

The patient exercises to a maximum point, and then a radionuclide tracer is administered intravenously and stress images are obtained.
For thallium, the patient returns 2–4 hours later so that rest images can be obtained.
For sestamibi, low-dose rest images are obtained, followed 3 hours later by a stress test and reinjection.
