How are these types differentiated?

Extra-axial masses press brain away, causing widening of CSF space and compression of gray matter; they may also be associated with dural reaction or tail.
Intra-axial masses efface the overlying subarachnoid space and may expand the cortex; dura and cortical vessels are pushed to the periphery.
