What changes result from syphilis in newborns?

Skeletal involvement occurs in 65% of patients:
Long bones show lucent bands of fragmen-tation and destruction (nonspecific)
Wimberger’s sign (bilateral metaphyseal destruction in the upper middle tibias)
Well-marginated, lytic lesions in the skull and flat bones
Diaphyseal periostitis in luetic diaphysitis (solid periosteal reaction)
Deformity or chronic deformity of the upper two-thirds of the tibia
