What is RDS?

RDS, also known as hyaline membrane disease or surfactant deficiency disease, affects premature neonates. These infants do not have sufficient surfactant production because the cells that line the alveoli are immature. Surfactant is a phospholipid compound that lowers surface tension. This lack of surfactant causes poor lung compliance.
