How can bowel obstruction be assessed radiographically?
Conventional radiography is the least expensive and least sensitive method because fluid-filled loops may not be seen. CT is 90% sensitive and shows the transition point in 50% to 75% of patients (i.e., dilated bowel turns to collapsed bowel). A barium enema, SBFT study, or enteroclysis may also be used. Enteroclysis is the most sensitive method, but it is difficult for patients and exposes them to more radiation.
