What is pseudomyxoma peritonei?

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is filling of the peritoneal space with mucinous material, usually as a result of metastasis from a cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix or ovary. The mucinous material forms gelatinous masses that appear cystic on CT but may calcify.
