When and how should a fluid collection be drained?

Fluid collections should be drained when they are large, infected, or symptomatic. They may be drained percutaneously, endoscopically, or surgically. Percutaneous drainage is associated with a lower morbidity rate and a shorter hospital stay post procedure than surgery.
