Describe a logical approach to evaluating the abnormal small bowel.

Dilation (≥3 cm): Is the dilation caused by mechanical obstruction or muscle dysfunction (e.g., adynamic ileus)?

Fold thickening (≥3 mm): Are the folds regular or irregular? Is the stomach involved?

Filling defects: Are the defects multiple or solitary? Is the bull’s-eye sign present?

Loop separation: Are the loops separated from one another by more than 6 mm?
