What is the alpha angle, and when is obtaining it useful?

The angle the acetabular roof makes with the vertical margin of the supraacetabular ileum. This can be useful to determine the acetabular angle when a horizontal plane cannot be determined (i.e., in a hip ultrasound). The acetabular angle is 90 degrees less the alpha angle.
