What is pseudoenhancement?

Less than 15 HU change is considered pseudoenhancement, that is, not true enhancement. When a cystic lesion enhances less than 15 HU between the unenhanced and enhanced scan, the change in attenuation is attributable to beam hardening of the surrounding enhancing parenchyma together with error in the reconstruction algorithm, giving the impression of an enhancing lesion.
