What is the role of MIBG nuclear medicine scanning in evaluation of pheochromocytomas?

MIBG scans survey the whole body for extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma when the site is not located by cross-sectional imaging. They also confirm small soft-tissue masses seen on CT or MRI as the source of the pheochromocytoma.
