What is the difference between an SBFT study and enteroclysis?
SBFT study: The patient swallows barium as for an upper gastrointestinal study, and sequential abdominal films are obtained at 15- to 30-minute intervals until the barium reaches the cecum. The abdomen is palpated until the terminal ileum is identified; the terminal ileum can then be examined with fluoroscopy and spot films.
Enteroclysis (small bowel enema): A tube is passed through the patient’s nose or mouth into the jejunum. Barium is pumped through the tube into the gastrointestinal tract, distending it more fully and yielding a more complete examination. The sensitivity for subtle disease is better, but the radiation dose is six times that of an SBFT study.
