When is a single-contrast barium enema used?
A single-contrast barium enema is used to rule out diverticulosis and to evaluate patients who are too ill to roll over (a requirement for double-contrast barium enema studies because air must be moved throughout the bowel). It can be used for rapid assessment to obtain answers to relatively simple questions (e.g., whether there is a large obstructing mass)
