How may gas in the portal veins be distinguished from gas in the bile ducts on plain film radiography?
On plain radiographs, portal venous gas extends to the periphery of the liver and biliary ductal gas is central in the bile ducts. The gas travels in the normal direction of flow in the structure (i.e., portal gas flows to the periphery like portal blood, and biliary gas stays central, where bile flows).
