Cardiac output may be obtained by measuring the area of the left ventricular outflow tract (a) and the velocity (v) at that location. These values can then be plugged into the equation f = a x v to obtain the flow per beat, or stroke volume. Cardiac output is the product of the stroke volume and the heart rate.
